Chasing the target of 305 runs set by South Africa, New Zealand won by scoring 308 runs with the help of Kane Williamson’s unbeaten century and Devon Conway’s innings of 97 runs. Williamson completed his century while batting at number four. He returned only after giving victory to his team by hitting 13 fours and 2 sixes in his innings of 113 balls. During this innings, he also completed his 7000 runs in ODI cricket.
In fact, Williamson completed 7000 runs in ODI cricket and created history by becoming the fastest batsman to score 7000 ODI runs for New Zealand. At the same time, he became the second fastest batsman in the world to reach this milestone. Before this match, Williamson had scored 6868 runs in 158 innings and he needed 132 runs to touch the 7000 mark. Former South African opener Hashim Amla is at the top, who completed 7000 runs in 150 innings. Before Williamson, the previous fastest New Zealand player to score 7000 ODI runs was Martin Guptill, who achieved this feat in 186 innings.
The record for the fastest 7,000 runs in ODI cricket is still held by South Africa’s Hashim Amla, who achieved the milestone in just 150 innings.
Thanks to Kane Williamson’s match-winning century, New Zealand defeated South Africa by 6 wickets, securing a spot in the final of the tri-nation series. This century was also Williamson’s first in ODIs since 2019 and his second-fastest century in ODI cricket.
