The tournament does not include prize money; in fact, there is the cup and the honor of victory!

To this day, the Ryder Cup is golf’s premier event. Held every two years, it brings together two 12-member teams from the United States and Europe who compete on a world stage for three days. In 2023, Italy will have the honor of hosting this great event! The Ryder cup 2023 location is Marco Simone Golf & Country Club in Guidonia, in the province of Rome.

Ryder Cup history:

The Ryder Cup, one of the most prestigious events in the world of golf, had its beginnings in an unofficial tournament in 1921, won by Great Britain. In 1926, another unofficial tournament was held, also won by the British, and witnessed by Samuel Ryder, who later proposed the idea of an official tournament between British and American teams. Currently, the Ryder Cup is run by the USPGA and the PGA European Tour.

The first edition was held in Worcester, Massachusetts, in 1927, between teams from Great Britain and the United States. For more than four decades, American dominance was overwhelming, but in 1973, players from Ireland joined the British team, and in 1979, other European countries were included thanks to the initiative of Savarino Ballesteros. This inclusion of players made the tournament much more competitive.

The Ryder Cup is held every two years, alternating venues between the United States and Europe. Originally, the Ryder Cup was always played in the British Isles when the place of celebration corresponded to Europe. In 1997, it was held for the first time outside Great Britain, at the Real Club Valderrama golf, with Savarino Ballesteros being the great promoter of it being played in Spain. He had an outstanding participation as captain and is recognized by connoisseurs as one of the best captains in the history of the Ryder Cup.

Since its inception, the Ryder Cup has been held every two years, except during World War II (1939 and 1945). The tournament has been postponed twice, after the attacks of September 11, 2001, and the 2020 edition, due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Ryder Cup game format:

The teams from Europe and the United States face each other in various match-play matches between the twelve players that make up each team. The tournament currently consists of eight foursomes, eight fourball matches, and twelve singles matches. Each match win awards one point to the winning team, while a draw results in half a point for each team.

Matches take place over three days, with four fourball and foursomes format matches on the first two days and twelve singles matches on the third. In the event of a tie, the team that won the previous edition keeps the title.

The captains of each team can select the eight players who will compete in each of the four rounds of the first two days. In foursomes, players take turns hitting the same ball, while in fourballs, all four players have their ball along the course, and each hole is won by the team whose player has the least number of hits. Individual matches are the standard competition format between two players, where the player who holes out the fewest number of strokes takes the hole.
