The History of Volleyball: From Its Creation to its professionalization
Several events that have contributed to its international development mark the history of volleyball. Volleyball is one of the most popular sports and has millions of followers around the world. It is a sport that puts two teams, each made up of six players, on the field in opposition, which is separated by a central net. Volleyball players must have very good physical and technical abilities. In this article, I will tell you about the origin of this emblematic sport!
Origin and History of volleyball
Let’s narrate the history of volleyball from its beginnings. A sports teacher named William G. Morgan created volleyball in February 1895 in the United States, more precisely in Holyoke, Massachusetts. Initially, it was an indoor sport played by business executives who found basketball too vigorous. Three main sports—basketball, tennis, and badminton—inspired this new game of volleyball. Volleyball was therefore seen as a good alternative to all these sports, especially basketball, based on its accessibility to many more people. This is how “maintained” was born, which was only an indoor sport and less violent than basketball.
This name stuck until Professor Alfred Halstead noticed the volatile nature of the game. He, therefore, suggested the name volleyball, which would be adopted by everyone a few months later. It is this same teacher (Alfred Halstead) who will then write the first rules of volleyball. This sport will become popular quickly in schools, high schools, and even in the American army before being exported internationally.
Evolution of volleyball over the years

In 1916, rules were established simultaneously by the YMCA and the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA). They articulated these rules around the address, the possibilities of play, and the attack. In 1917, the set went from 21 to 15 points, and three years later, they introduced the rule of three touches on the ball. Thus, the first national volleyball competitions were organized in the United States in 1922. In 1928, the USVBA organized annual national volleyball tournaments, and in 1945, a women’s division was set up.

Development of volleyball internationally
After the United States, several countries have integrated volleyball into their national sports programs. In 1900, the first country was Canada. We can also note that Canadians have taken part in the development of volleyball. So they wrote their lines in the history of volleyball. American soldiers then brought volleyball to the European continent during the First World War. In 1947, the International Volleyball Federation was created in Paris, before being moved to Lausanne (Switzerland) in 1984. The international volleyball federation had 210 member countries by the end of the 20th century.
In 1913, the Far Eastern Games in Manila hosted the first international volleyball competition. A few decades later, the World Volleyball Championships reserved for men in 1942 and those reserved for women in 1952 were born. Volleyball made its debut at the 1964 Tokyo Olympics.
